Going to the Dark Side

For the last several weeks, I have been playing with my new favorite clay body. It is Laguna's Sable Black Cone 10 clay. It is almost four times the cost of any other clay that I use and I have to pay for shipping, but to be honest....I don't care! The results can be absolutely stunning when one applies the right glaze and our studio has the right glaze!

I have sold several pieces online and have orders for a few more and people don't seem to be overly concerned about the prices I am charging for work made with this clay, but it will be interesting to see if that holds true for local onsite sales. Either way, this clay will be part of my collection going forward. It is fascinating to see how it responds to various glazes. When you apply a clear glaze it turns blue. When you apply our glossy Vegas Red, it it a brilliant red with blue and black undertones.

When we unloaded our studio kiln yesterday, my studio mate was teasing me about being a closeted "goth" now that I have gone to the dark side. This is the only clay that I have seen that truly does fire to a coal black finish - no reds, no rusts...coal black.
